The Snoligoster

The Snoligoster is a legendary Florida cryptid rooted in early 20th-century American lumberjack folklore, particularly associated with Lake Okeechobee. First documented in William T. Cox’s 1910 book “Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods,” this unusual beast is depicted as a massive, legless, crocodile-like animal covered in glossy black fur. It features a prominent dorsal spike and a propeller-like tail composed of three bony plates, which it uses to navigate the swampy waters.

According to the lore, the Snoligoster preys on humans, capturing them with its powerful jaws and impaling them on its back spike. Once it has collected several victims, it uses its tail to dig a hole, scrapes the bodies off its spike into the pit, grinds them into a pulp, and consumes the mixture. Some versions of the tale add that the creature can distinguish between good and evil individuals, consuming only the “shadow flesh” of the wicked.
