Cracker Curs

Art by Guy LaBree

The Florida Cracker Cur is the unsung hero of the backwoods. Bred for stamina, grit, and intelligence, these dogs were essential to early settlers for herding cattle, protecting homesteads, and most famously, hog hunting. Even today, you’ll find Cracker Curs tracking invasive wild hogs through sawgrass and palmettos. Some have even been trained to help wrangle pythons, iguanas, and other invasive species tearing through Florida’s ecosystem.

They’re not polished, they’re not pampered, but they’re pure Florida—scrappy, loyal, and made for the swamp.
