Reverend Houson R. Cypress, also known by his Miccosukee name Yahalétke, is an artist, activist, poet, and ordained minister. He runs the Love the Everglades, an organization that develops platforms and initiatives for environmental protection and cultural preservation. He has also emerged as an important voice in advocating for twospirit and nonbinary gender people.
Through his organization, Love the Everglades Movement, Cypress has become a major force within Miccosukee society as an advocate for cultural preservation, environmental protection, business development and sovereignty. Cypress also acts as a cultural ambassador, leading the way for meaningful exchange and connection between his society of clans and the outside world. One of his main focus is on bringing together all people and cultures in the fight for our environment, since we all depend on a healthy ecosystem for survival—not just Native people.
