Ethel Cain is the stage name of singer-songwriter Hayden Silas Anhedönia. She was born in Tallahassee and raised in Perry, and has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music.
Raised in a devout Southern Baptist household, she was homeschooled and sang in her church’s choir, where her father served as a deacon. That early immersion in hymnals and Southern lore would later shape the haunting beauty of her sound.
Her 2022 debut album, “Preacher’s Daughter,” is a sprawling concept record exploring faith, trauma, and the shadow side of the American dream. At first, the album flew under the radar. But in April 2025, its vinyl release sparked a wave of devotion with no label push, selling 37,000 copies in one week and debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200. With that, Hayden made history as the first openly transgender artist to earn a top 10 album on the Billboard charts.
Blending elements of indie rock, ambient, and Southern gothic, Hayden’s music is less about genre and more about atmosphere—her own mythic universe, slow-burning and cinematic. She’s earned critical acclaim and a faithful following not because she checks boxes, but because she creates something personal and unforgettable.
Her next album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You,” is slated for release in August 2025, and fans are already bracing for another revelation.
